RESEARCH AND EVALUATION ASSISTANT
Visitor Research & Evaluation Department
On-Call Position
SUMMARY:
This on-call position is responsible for assisting with research and evaluation studies for a variety of exhibit research, public programs, and development grant projects. Responsibilities include interviewing visitors using open-ended questions, generating non-leading but clarifying follow-up questions during the interview, recording visitors' activities and responses, entering and coding the data, and actively suggesting improvements to instruments and methods being developed. This positions report to the Program Manager, and will work closely with senior evaluation staff on exhibit projects as assigned.
ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS:
- Assist in the design and testing of new evaluation instruments and methods, noting problems and suggesting improvements
- Conduct open-ended interviews with visitors about their expectations and responses to different versions of exhibits or programs, using questions provided by senior research staff
- Generate appropriate non-leading questions to further clarify visitors' responses
- Solicit written consent from visitors to be audio or video taped
- Audio and videotape visitors using various recording systems
- Observe visitors and make rigorous written records of their behaviors, as identified by the senior research staff
- Input visitor interview data into spreadsheets and other electronic documents, and score data using coding schemes developed by senior research staff
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- Excellent listening and communication skills
- Ability to take comprehensive and legible notes while interviewing visitors
- Ability to take and follow direction from more senior evaluation staff
- Interest in and/or experience with evaluation process
- Accurate, rigorous, and detail-oriented
- Availability to work a flexible schedule desirable
- Ability to speak, read and write in either Spanish or Chinese (Cantonese preferable) desirable
